A 7000 Year Old Mediterranean Jewel
Embraced by the sandy Costa Blanca beaches and caressed by the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Alicante has a rich heritage built over thousands of years. Alacant (as it's known in Valencian) has a deep history ranging from the first tribes that arrived at the slopes of Mount Benacantil to Greeks, Romans and Moors. Overlooking the city from the top of Mount Benacantil, the Castle of Santa Barbara was built in the 9th century during Islamic rule. Barrio de la Santa Cruz is the historic quarter, featuring narrow streets, old houses and cobbled steps. Framed by palm trees and covered with a snaking pattern of white, red and blue tiles, the Explanada de Espana is considered one of Spain’s most beautiful promenades.

Alicante combines the best of a beach holiday with a city break. The shorefront is very attractive with lots of restaurants to choose from. Go a little further back and there a variety of other busy restaurants and bars. There are two castles you can visit view great views of the coast and city. There is also an excellent main shopping area for the big shops. Go a little further back and you won't feel like you are in a tourist town at all. The people are all friendly and helpful. Alicante is a fantastic city with plenty of great cafés, bars, and restaurants to enjoy. The Central Market is a real highlight, full of fresh produce and local character. Getting around is easy with the excellent tram and bus services, making it simple to explore the city and nearby coastal towns.
