It's a pretty medieval town, and I read that they control development, yet it still allows souvenir shops! It suffers in the way all pretty touristy places do: not many decent places to eat at a reasonable price. After one evening looking around we used the hotel as a base to travel to other places. Plenty of gift shops and restaurants and some interesting, historical buildings/museums all within the town. The main central area has cobbled streets so can be a little hard/difficult underfoot. All the parking areas seemed to be very busy and plenty of people about. There was an open-air Mariachi band concert on one of the nights which was fab. The town is also well placed to get to the beaches at Suances and Comillas, both of which were fantastic towns. Also close to the motorway to get a little further into the mountains if you want to do that. The town was very busy, all of the restaurants had the same menu except for a few, unfortunately the ones that were different were all fully booked. We eventually had to pick a restaurant (or go hungry as there are no shops and had to wait outside for well over an hour for our food, when it came it was disappointing to say the least, and was way overpriced for the level of quality. Quaint small town with medieval properties. Less than 30 minute drive to the ferry port at Santander. This is our second stop over on the way to Santander. We stopped off before catching the ferry the next day, so handy for Santander. It is a smaller Parador which I prefer. Very friendly service throughout. Lovely old building and fabulous landing where the bedrooms on first floor leed off. All stylised in keeping with this lovely old building. Food I felt was better than some of the other Paradores we stayed at on our trip. Fantastic location for visiting Santillana del Mar. The hotel has an open-air car park behind the hotel (not to confuse with the car park of the neigbouring hotel where we mistakenly parked first). Great breakfast. Upon arrival the hotel excused itself for the WIFI which was temporarily out of order. Also the parking is a great plus, is just on the side to the property and it is reserved for the hotel's guests (free of charge).
