Vézelay is a crazy place.
Vézelay is a crazy place. It is hyped up in every tourist guide on the Bourgogne you can find, but it is actually a one street village on the top of a mountain whose only attraction is an oversized cathedral on the Way of St. James, and some tourist shops for decorative arts (if you like that). Rural exodus is unmistakable, there are several buildings for sale, and the ladies who run the hotel where we stayed told us that the village has only 70 regular inhabitants left, the rest are pilgrims and tourists. We only stayed for one night, passing through on our way back home, and for us it was perfect as it was. The hotel (Les Glycines) was great, very recommendable, the surrounding landscape is beautiful and possibly nice to explore wandering (we didn't try). Vézelay also seems to be a hot spot for pilgrims who find company there.Guest review bySusanneGermany - 10.0

The village and the famous medieval basilica are part of a world heritage listed pilgrimage network on the increasingly popular journey to Santiago in northwest Spain. The Basilica is one of the most beautiful medieval churches in France and has been a favourite of mine since studying medieval architectural history at university in the late 1960s.
