The area and scenery was lovely as were the surrounding villages of Middleton in Teesdale and Barnard Castle. There are plenty of places to visit. The Low and High Force waterfalls with a walk along the River Tees was exceptional. A friend and I booked the Youth Hostel at Holwick at the very last minute, as the first stop on a road trip from London. It was easy to find, the welcome was warm, the accommodation very clean and comfortable, fellow guests charming and interesting, and glorious walks (to High Force and Gibson's Cave, for example) from the doorstep.
