FAQs about hotels in Portsmouth

Royal Dockyard of the British Isles

An important harbour for centuries, Portsmouth counts with one of the busiest ferry piers in the United Kingdom, has the oldest dry dock still in use in the world. Its Historic Dockyard is home to famous British ships like Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and the HMS Warrior.

In the picturesque Old Town you’ll find typical English pubs, coloured houses, and small independent shops. It also has a Fish Market provided by the city’s small fishing fleet. In Old Portsmouth is possible to find smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses, some of them not far from the ferry harbour.

The Gunwharf Quays are a modernly renovated shopping area, home to the Spinnaker Tower, while the centre has an ever-growing number of shops. Don’t miss Commercial Road and the Cascades Shopping Centre. Hotels in Portsmouth’s city centre allow you to be close to everything what the city has to offer.

For relaxing moments, Portsdown Hill allows panoramic views over the city and the Isle of Wight. During summer, its sandy beaches are a must.

Great place, excellent transport connections, shopping experience appropriate to its size. Very enjoyable. Only drawback is the continuous inhalation of secondary smokes from undisciplined smokers. The City Council may consider tightening the laws on outdoor smoking especially in the high streets and beaches to protect the vulnerable who stands to be harmed from the inhalation of secondary nicotine smokes.

The walk from old Portsmouth to Southsea became a regular delight. Loads to see at the Victory site - it's a bit pricey but really does offer a full day if you have the interest and stamina! Disappointed that the Charles Dickens birthplace and Garrison Church are hardly ever open and we missed both

If you're visiting, try and get down to Old Portsmouth on...

If you're visiting, try and get down to Old Portsmouth on the cobbles, if you've not experienced some real old architecture before you'll be in for a treat.. the whole area is beautiful, even despite the it being bombed heavily during the war. My personal favourite for food and drinks around there is the Abar, which itself is 2 minutes from Gunwharf, if you fancy a spot of shopping, plenty of more restaurants, or a nice view from up in the Spinnaker Tower… Nice walk along the seafront there, weather pending… if you're up to it, wonder down towards Eastney (to the east funnily enough!) and pop in to The Eastney Tavern, lovely old pub there with decent food From there… if you fancy another good view, head out of town up to Portsdown Hill to The Churchillian, wonderful views especially on a sunny day. If you've got kids, theres an activity centre in Fort Purbrook nearby there, also, if you're interested in some military history, and some big guns! Theres the Royal Armouries in Fort Nelson, which is in the other direction about 10 minutes from there, which is free to visit too.. Overall, really nice town to visit.. Good for a little weekend break away from the city, if you still want a bit of the city and the Sea! There loads more to see around there too, like a day trip, or two, over the Isle of Wight

The Historic Dockyard is fantastic, it needs several days to see everything, if you do want to go in again the explorer ticket is the way to go as it lasts all year and allows multiple visits plus a 50 min harbour trip included. Plenty of places to eat on the front and on Gun Wharf Quay, we used the Ship near the dockyard which looks a bit tired but the food was excellent with very large portions. All sorts of worldwide food is available on the Quay shopping Centre and lots of GF choices. Find an apartment or hotel with free parking, leave the car there and walk or use the really excellent bus services (took our bus passes OK) as parking is at a premium in Portsmouth. Spinnaker Tower is also worth a visit just for the stunning views.

We come back to Portsmouth, because it's our home town. We don't live in the UK now. Generally, there are plenty of activities in the surrounding area, bus routes good, and train connection all close by.

The character and grandeur of the building. There are not many hotels like this around these days. Very beautiful lobby and stairs area. The location was fantastic for Southsea and Portsmouth attractions. Views from the room were fabulous of the sea and all the boats going past. Bed was very comfortable.
