Not a lot to do in Stanhope. Pretty quiet.
Not a lot to do in Stanhope. Pretty quiet. A few pubs and shops. If you have a car, you can travel around to other more interesting places. We visited Durham, which was lovely. We did the boat trip there and it was very interesting and good value. Roots of India takeaway in Stanhope was very nice. Centre of Upper Weardale, a town with character in the shadow of old limestone quarries, lead mining and continuing sheep farming. Well placed for Barnard Castle and Teesdale, Durham City and not far from the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria's Lake District. Walk from St John's Chapel to Wearhead by the river then back on the valley high road to the north parallel to the river.
