The location of our accommodation meant we were able to visit several places in Rutland - as well as just on the outskirts - including Stamford, Uppingham, Oakham (and Melton Mowbray on our return home!) Uppingham itself is a small market type town with some interesting independent shops and pubs. Rutland has been aptly described as 'the Cotswolds without the crowds'. The scenery is lovely and villages picturesque. The roads are relatively quiet and we had no difficulty parking in the summer holidays. Centrally placed for National Trust, English Heritage and Historic Houses properties, with equally attractive towns and villages nearby. Uppingham is a really pretty town with a nice range of shops...
Uppingham is a really pretty town with a nice range of shops and restaurants. HIghly recommend staying at The Crown pub and visiting the world-famous Goldmark Art Gallery. The art and ceramics are fantastic and the staff are very welcoming. In fact everyone we met in Uppingham was really friendly! If you want to go for a walk / bird watching- Rutland Water is nearby. Excellent communication and very accommodating staff. Very quiet nights sleep and good continental breakfast. Hot shower, clean room, good fast wifi and comfy bed.
