Great place to visit but parking a bit of an issue. Main car park we used was €10 a day and was very tight so no wonder most cars had scrapes and bangs on them 😳. An evening walking tour with guide was absolutely superb and a real must. Gaetano, our guide was brilliant and so much cooler to do in the evening. Want a unique experience then you must see Matera . We stayed in Locanda di san martino which has thermal baths and enjoyed a massage .Took an open car with guide and was worth it, went into a cave dwelling set up as it was in days gone .We just fell in love with the sassi in Matera !Guest review bymichelleAustralia - 10.0

Matera is quite a unique place to visit and Sassi Matera is nothing like I’ve ever seen and had I known that we would have planned a longer stay. It was so easy to enter the Sassi and you could go up/down and enter/exit in so many places. Matera was bigger than I had imagined, very clean and progressive. Our appartment owner gave us a map but they did not appear readily available , number of people asked us where they could get one. Take the green route and walk the full cit , really worth it. Descend into the sassi but do in the morning when cooler. Eat at burger and pale, divine ribs and wine only 4 euros a glass. Is a super interesting place to visit. For the most part, you can do it in a day and a half. The tour thst included the stone house and the rock Church was extremely informative. The TikTok tour has great views, but not as informative.Guest review byAnonymous

There are plenty of souvenir shops surrounding too. Perfect location and the cave room is definitely a unique experience. Strongly believe to have a stay to enjoy like a local. The location of the place is in the ZTL zone but hotel staffs are responsive to guide us and provide contacts on parking arrangements to us. The shuttle bus stop from the parking is close, and so are plenty of great restaurants and bars. Both owners where very helpful and made our stay in Matera one we will not forget.
