The Simplicity of the Emerald Coast

Olbia is all about the sea, and what a glorious turquoise sea it is. As the gateway to Sardinia’s stunning Emerald Coast, this down-to-earth town is often overlooked in favour of the more glamorous resorts. However, it does have attractions of its own.

The simple Basilica of San Simplicio dates to the 11th century and the Church of St Paul the Apostle is also medieval. The National Archaeology Museum houses Roman ships, as well as prehistoric artefacts from the surrounding area.

Sardinia has a wealth of prehistoric structures and one of these – the Tomba dei Giganti Su Monte‘e S’Abe – is near Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport and medieval Pedres Castle. Across the bay is Sa Testa Sacred Well, dating to at least 1200 BC.

Along the coast in Pittulongu are the real attractions – fantastic, unspoilt beaches from where you can see rocky Tavolara Island, a popular diving site. In summer, boats sail there from Isola Bianca Harbour, the arrival point of ferries from the Italian mainland. The harbour’s fishing boats are responsible for the fantastic mussels in Olbia’s seafood restaurants, some of which are amid bars and shops on Corso Umberto – the locals’ favourite passeggiata spot.

    Olbia as an urban city has a wonderful centre.

    Olbia as an urban city has a wonderful centre. The harbour and plaza areas are beautiful as are the two main churches. There is a great park with lots of play and sport facilities for all age groups. - across the road from the Martini hotel. There are also children's play areas situated along the harbour front There are numerous really good Italian and fish restaurants. There is a good selection of craft, souvenir and clothes shops to suit all budgets, We would have liked to have visited the museum but there were conservation conferences being held there the week we were visiting. We visited the small harbour front market and the larger Saturday market. During our week-long stay we spent one day at Mamas beach and took bus trips to a few of the small villages nearby, but to fully appreciate the beauty of Sardinia I would recommend hiring a car.

    Olbia is the best place to stay if you want to see and travel the north-east coast of Sardegna. You will be in driving distance from Cala Golorite and from other amazing beaches that must be seen while on the island

    Its a great place to stay to discover the area (east side of the island), its right in the middle to visit La Magdalena and Oroseo Gulf. There is plenty of restaurants and things to do/visit. The beaches around the city were great as well (pitulongu, port istana). There are not a lot of parking places around so you might need to drive for a while and "fight" for a spot.

    Olbia is a great spot when you plan to explore the northern or eastern part of the coast. It is a nice city with lots of cafes, restaurants. A car is a must, so you can travel freely without limits. Staying in Olbia without a car would be rather tricky and get you bored quickly. As a HQ for your travels is perfect. Traffic for the tourists is tricky and you have to be extra careful.

    We took a train here from the South to explore North...

    We took a train here from the South to explore North Sardegna and flew home out of Olbia. We didn't spend a lot of time in Olbia proper but we did see much of the surrounding area. This north island is absolutely gorgeous! If you have a car you can do many day trips from here. We rented a zodiac boat to explore La Maddalena, if your up for it this was a great alternative to taking the ferry across. The beaches around here can't be beat. We are adventure travelers and fell in love with this island. Hiking, biking, caving, snorkeling/diving, boating and Via Ferrata climbing- Sardegna has it all!

    I Loved the city, especially at night when it came alive.

    I Loved the city, especially at night when it came alive. It makes a great city break, although you do have to get transport to the beaches. You can also stay on a beach resort and travel to the city. that's a personal choice. Would I go again, Yes I can't wait, maybe hire a car to tour more of the area.

    Stayed here before and booked another night in a different room. The room was BIG. Very comfy bed and big terrace with perfect "sunset watching" view. Very relaxing. Well maintained garden and house. Owner was very accommodating. The location was perfect, easy access to a nice beach and 15 min drive to the airport. Compared to other rooms i stayed in Italy/Sardinia... this one comes top.

    Very nice hotel with all the facities you need, morning coffee is included and very welcomed. The room, bathroom, pool, everything is new and comfortable. The location is great, close to the sea and Olbia airport and also Costa Smeralda beaches are easy to reach from there. The host is very helpful and helped us with shower and luggage deposit for a late chek-out.

    The very good location and extensive breakfast choice.. The beautiful designed building with marble and quality materials .. The staff were all great, especially the breakfast waiters. Our room had a lovely view of the port and Ferris wheel and a very good air-conditioning unit. A very well run hotel close to Olbia old town.

    We stayed here one night when we arrived in Sardinia and another when we left.. The location is perfect for exploring and enjoying downtown Olbia. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent. The rooms were very comfortable and cool. As a final note, the shower gel smelled amazing.
