Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore.
Verbania is a really good base for a stay on Lake Maggiore. It has 2 parts - Intra where the main ports are, and Pallanza. There are lots of boats leaving and arriving every day at Intra, both passenger-only and ferries with cars, so very useful for exploring other parts of the lake. Intra has a nice sea front and an old town with little courtyards and cafes dotted all over it. The highlight of Pallanza is Villa Taranto, the botanic gardens. There are animals around the house including two friendly dogs (but thanks to an ultrasound barrier you don't need to have any contact with them if you don't like dogs). But above all, Andrea the owner was incredibly kind to us. He came down the street to guide us, gave us lots of vegetables from his garden and made sure we really felt at home. It has 2 courtyards where you can relax, an elegant restaurant and a very nice bar.
