The owners are such a nice couple, very kind. We really enjoyed our days at hostel+cafe. The place is beautiful, very clean and confortable. The food was very tasty, Japanese traditional breakfast. We strongly recommend it.

Stunning! Well thought out private dwelling, with juliet balcony where your bed is. Little kitchenette, with fridge. The bathroom is big and well planned out. There is a wood burning stove in the corner of the room so you can make it warm and cosy (there is also a heater/ac/fan, for all temps!). We were only there one night and paid to have an evening meal there. Four courses cooked by the owner, all locally sourced, delicious! Highly recommend this place. I wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the hiking in the nearby national park.

Stefano is very friendly and accommodating. He made us fresh bread and jam. It’s really good! Room is very clean and well equipped with towels, toiletries even toothbrushes. I also like that there is plenty of hangers and space to hang clothes. Space for luggage too. Fridge, kettle and coffee machine available for use. Free parking too! Convenient to visit Mt Aso and Takachiho Gorge from here.

Easy walking distance (5 minutes) from the shrine & nightly Kagura performances. About a 20 minute walk to the Gorge & the row boat station. Let me start with the location. Rekan is very conveniently situated — right near Takachiho Shrine, close to the bus station, and just a short walk from a local market with souvenirs and regional products. There are also cafés and restaurants nearby. It’s not far from Takachiho Gorge, and overall, there’s always somewhere nice to walk and explore. The hotel has its own parking as well. The room was excellent — clean, spacious, fully equipped, with a generous selection of complimentary snacks and drinks. There’s a private onsen and a small garden that you can enjoy. Honestly, I didn’t even want to leave my room. The staff were extremely polite and friendly. Always ready to help — they personally advised me on the best places to book in the city and recommended where to go. They were genuinely interested in my trip and eager to assist. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding. I overate every time. The staff kindly explained and presented everything with such care that I even felt a bit awkward from their overwhelming politeness. It’s a wonderful place, and I’d love to return again.

Very nice house close to Mount Aso. For us as western foreigners the whole region was quite different from the picture we typically make ourselves of Japan - much more rural and rather sparsely populated. Very interesting to see and experience. Ken is an excellent host, giving great recommendations and caring for his guests.
