You have to just accept the fact that there is going to be massive crowds of tourists. My favorite locations were the less crowded temples and shrines. Whenever you can go early or later to temples the better. I did go mid morning and day and still got the pictures I wanted, but you have to be patient. Favorites: Hanging out on the riverside at sunset, going behind Fushimi Inari Shrine for the hike up Mt Inari where you get to see less crowded and in my opinion more interesting shines (though less elaborate and big but impressive in other ways), and finally Sanjūsangendō Temple (less crowded and exceeded my expectations - didn’t think the size of the Kannons was going to be so impressive. This place was stunning and less crowded). Golden Temple is so crowded but worth seeing. Silver is excellent for gardens/views.

Kyoto is a nice city.

Kyoto is a nice city. Many of their renown cites are free (Fushimi-Inari, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove), though I'd recommend a tour of Fushimi-Inari in order to learn more about the history. Night tours are the best. You get fewer people and awesome pictures.

Kyoto is an amazing city full of history and beauty.

Kyoto is an amazing city full of history and beauty. Unfortunately it’s also suffering from over tourism quite badly. If you choose to go there, do so knowing that crowds will be everywhere that’s popular. So go early! The place I always go to is Katsura Rikyu but you need to get a reservation ahead if possible. It’s amazing.

Numerous, varied cultural sites. The eating around Kyoto ranged from egg sandwiches at 7/11 to Michelin recommended spots in the city. Getting around was easy. We walked and used the subway or bus for longer rides. Would recommend walking tours of the old city.

You are spoiled for choice in Kyoto: many shrines and temples, some of them World Heritage Sites, beautiful gardens, and a wide selection of restaurants. The network of bus and subway routes makes getting around the city fairly easy, although it takes a bit of planning. And as with everywhere else I visited in Japan, people are unfailingly helpful.

The city is incredible.

The city is incredible. To date my favourite vacations have taken place in Kyoto. The ancient history being preserved alongside the modern is really amazing to behold, and it can be seen everywhere in the city, from old style buildings down each side street to the accessibility updates in the most ancient temples. The shrines and temples are the things I’d recommend the most, and the public transit makes getting around a breeze.

The staff was very friendly and did their best to meet any request with a more than satisfactory answer. We truly recommend taking the half-board option as every meal (breakfast or dinner) was as amazing as it was delicious. The true Ryokan experience also with our futons which were laid down by the staff while we were eating dinner in the hotel restaurant and these futons were put away while we were having breakfast. Really amazing Ryokan, notwithstanding the short distance from Kyoto Station, Higashi-Honganji temple and its garden.

We really liked our stay at Kinparo. The staff was very friendly (even if not all of them speak English very well, they did their best to meet your needs). Every evening the futons were made ready for us. First time for us sleeping in a Ryokan and we found it more comfortable than we thought! Overall, it was a very special experience. The location of the hotel is great, literally two steps from the market. Also, walking distance from the station and pretty much from all sites in Gion.

This was an exceptional hotel. It was probably the most thoughtful hotel I've stayed where everything was perfectly presented or provided. Yes it's not 5 stars but it just got all of the amenities and basics so completely correct that I just feel this is the best complete showing for a hotel I've ever experienced. Ah.. I miss kyoto!

Truly an exceptional property, in every way. Friendly, helpful and courteous staff. Luxury ambience and amenities. The property has lots of character and lovely design elements. Surely one of the best boutique hotels I have stayed in, ever in my life! Felt sad when it was time to check out 😊.

Loved it. The room was like a faux modern ryokan. The staff was amazing. A very good location. An easy walks to shopping and some parts of Gion. A few choices for train or buses. Wished I could have stayed there forever. Best hotel of my trip.
