History and Sandy Algarve Beaches
With a long and rich history, Lagos is nowadays a famous beach resort of the sunny Portuguese region of Algarve. Including wide sandy beaches and quiet coves enclosed by ochre cliffs, it also offers a lively city centre with one of the best mixes between history and modernity in the region.
King Henry the Navigator chose it as a base for his trips of discovery during the 15th century, and later on, it became the residence of the Algarve governors. The Old Town is circled by medieval walls, typical narrow streets, historic buildings and charming squares. B&B’s and hotels in Lagos’s historic centre allow you to enjoy these picturesque surroundings.
Apart from being an important centre for sailing, the city has amazing beaches, like Meia Praia or Praia da Dona Ana. Resorts and hotels on Lagos’ beaches are the perfect choice for sun lovers, while the hotels near the modern Lagos Marina are popular, as they are both close to the centre and the railway station.

Lagos felt like a home from home for us, easy to get around,...
Lagos felt like a home from home for us, easy to get around, whether on foot or with the super-affordable Ubers. The food was incredible; not a single bad meal in 14 days, and all very reasonably priced. We loved Pie, Tieto (the all-you-can-eat Japanese spot, incredible) and of course Na Na Bah, home to one of the world’s top 50 burgers. You can't miss out on an early morning breakfast and one of the best coffees in town by going to Black and White - simply the best staff! The Portuguese people are genuinely friendly and full of life, we made so many new friends and felt completely welcomed. We are already planning our next trip and honestly wouldn’t change a thing. We split our stay between the Carvi Beach Hotel by Praia Dona Ana and the Marina Club Hotel near the marina, both within easy walking distance of the old town and both we would happily return to either. And do not miss the little café at the top of Praia Dona Ana Beach , all the profit helps to support the Philharmonic Orchester and Marisa serves what might just be the best 'Pastel de Nata' in all of Lagos.Guest review byJoannaUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Although the cliffs were amazing to see, the beaches are hard to access. Parking is a nightmare. Lots of steps down to the beach. Not good for anyone with mobility issues. Dona Ana beach is pretty small during high tide. North Americans who are used to easily accessible, long beaches in Florida, Carolinas, Maine or California may find the beach accessibility stressful and the beaches disappointing. Lots of restaurants and stores in the central area. Touristy but fun for a short stay. Lots of bars for the younger crowd. If you are staying in the central historical area walking distance to the restaurants, you will likely have to park outside the city walls and walk to your accommodation. New owners took over this property in January 2024 and they have made many thoughtful upgrades. Dora was such a lovely hostess and made us feel right at home, while the staff was great too.
