We did the 2 day excursion of Ponta Delgada ( since we chose not to rent a car) ….it was phenomenal. The tour guide Joao was very knowledgeable and brought us to the most amazing spots on the island. Lovely place to explore , the botanical garden Borges is free and really nice to see . Lovely bars and restaurants scattered all over . Plenty to see and do here for a few days . We got a taxi to the lava caves in town ( grutas do carvão ) but we walked back as it’s only a 15/20 min walk . The 1 hour Cave tour is worth doing and cost €10 .Guest review byPaulPortugal - 8.0

I liked the area around the port, there is a wide choice of pleasant places to eat. I also liked the swimming area in the port, showers and changing rooms are paid but swimming is free. Parking can be complicated, our hotel advised us not to try to use the app to pay if you are in a hire car and this makes sense as we got a ticket and then there were three unpaid fines from the previous week added on. We visited the parking office with a copy of the rental agreement and got that sorted out. I highly recommend the gruta de carvao but it's very popular so book in advance and wear decent shoes as in places the floor is very uneven.Guest review byCarolFrance - 8.0

This is pretty interesting location and expectations should be assessed accordingly. It is a rocky island and if you are there for sunny golden beaches, this may be not the right place. We rented a car but there are many small group excursions and trips which cover entire island. The town itself is clean and nice with plenty of restaurants and shops. I would recommend the island of Sao Miguel and the city of Ponta Delgada to everyone. This island is a hidden gem not known by most American's. I think it was probably the best inn I ever stayed at and there is definitely no other place I would want to stay when I visit the Azores. In case you want to rent a car, ask the owners because they know a place that will deliver the car and paperwork straight to the inn. Taxi from and to the airport is also cheap and convenient.
