Kaltental is a market town in the northern Ostallgäu area and comprises the districts Altensberg, Aufkirch, Blonhofen, Eldratshofen, Frankenhofen, Gerbishofen and Helmishofen.
The castle ruins near Helmishofen are particularly noteworthy. The castle was destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants' War. Today, only the so-called "Roman tower" and some smaller wall remains are still standing.
In the "Alte Sennerei", a former alpine dairy in Aufkirch, and now a gallery since 2015 one can view, among other events, contemporary art exhibitions. Every spring there is a ceramics exhibition with renowned artists displaying their exhibits in the field of object ceramics and raku ceramics.
In the summer months, exhibitions by sculptors can be visited, which are also shown outdoors.
In and around the Markt Kaltental community, there is no limit to the hiking and biking sporting activities. For example, the steam locomotive circuit leads through Kaltental - for the most part on a bike and foot path built on the former Kaufbeuren-Schongau rail line.
