Stolberg near Aachen – Historic Copper Town in the Eifel Region
Location & Surroundings:
Stolberg is located in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the edge of the Northern Eifel, just about 10 km east of Aachen. The town is nestled in a charming hilly landscape with forests, valleys, and streams – ideal for nature lovers, hikers, and cyclists.
Old Town & Sights:
Stolberg’s historic old town is known for its well-preserved half-timbered houses, narrow alleys, and especially the impressive Stolberg Castle, which towers above the city. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle now hosts a museum, cultural events, and offers stunning views.
Copper Heritage:
Often called the Copper Town, Stolberg was a major center of brass and copper production in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Copper Courtyard Museum (Kupferhofmuseum) and many former copper yards still tell the story of this industrial heritage.
