Malaga's historic centre is dominated by the majestic Alcazaba, an 11th century Moorish fortress offering panoramic views of the city and harbour. Its walls, lush gardens and interior courtyards convey a sense of grandeur and mystery. Next to the Alcazaba is the Roman Theatre, an archaeological treasure dating back to the 1st century BC, which has been carefully restored so that visitors can appreciate its original splendour.
Strolling through the historic centre, you will discover a wonderful mix of narrow cobbled streets, picturesque squares and magnificent historic buildings. Calle Larios, an elegant pedestrian artery, is the heart of the centre and is lined with fashionable shops, cafés and restaurants. It is an ideal place to enjoy a relaxing stroll while admiring the modernist architecture of the surrounding buildings.
The Plaza de la Constitución is another must-see in the historic centre. This square, which used to be the nerve centre of the city in medieval times, is a lively place where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy a drink or a coffee in the open air. The buildings surrounding the square display a variety of architectural styles, from Renaissance to Baroque.
Malaga's historic centre is also home to a number of impressive churches. Malaga Cathedral, known as "La Manquita" because of its incomplete tower, is a magnificent example of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Inside, there are valuable works of art, such as the 18th century chapel and the monumental organ.
In addition to its architectural heritage, the historic centre of Malaga is famous for its renowned museums. The Museo Picasso Málaga houses an exceptional collection of works by the famous painter Pablo Picasso, who was born in the city. The Carmen Thyssen Museum offers an extensive collection of 19th century Spanish art.
