The municipality of Teror is located in the central eastern part of the island, at an altitude of 543 metres. The great attraction of the town is not only the great devotion to the Virgen del Pino, patron saint of the island, but it is also a municipality of great historical and natural value. Teror is home to the Basilica of the Virgen del Pino, patron saint of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. It is located in the Plaza del Pino and its construction began in 1767, although it has been restored several times since then. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine is the most important building in the municipality and one of the most outstanding examples of religious architecture in the Canary Islands, around which the urban development of Teror and the evolution of its historic centre were originally shaped. The Plaza de Teror is the nerve centre of the town. From here you can see the typical balconies of Canarian architecture that adorn a large part of the municipality. La Alameda is another of the busiest places in the historic centre of the town. Its origins date back to an esplanade in front of the Episcopal Palace, in 1793. This palace was the residence of the prelates of the Diocese, nowadays the Casa de la Cultura, which houses temporary exhibitions. Close to the Basilica is the Plaza Teresa de Bolívar, renovated in the 1950s, where you can see a bust of the liberator Simón Bolívar. There are several protected areas: the Caldera de Pino Santo, the Finca de Osorio, the Natural Park of Doramas, the Agujereada (mountain formation), with the ravines of Madrelagua, del Pino and de la Molineta. The Osorio Estate is located two kilometres from the historic centre of Teror and is the natural enclosure par excellence of the municipality through which roads, mountains, ravines, farmland and forest run. In its grounds, the remains of laurel forests have been preserved and a large area is covered with chestnut trees.
