The town of Gran Tarajal is located in the municipality of Tuineje, on the east coast of the island and is the closest place to Africa, less than 100 kilometres. It is the second most important town on the island, and is mainly a commercial and service centre, rather than a tourist resort. It has a black sand beach (Blue Flag), more than a kilometre long, an important marina, and is, together with Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable, the third commercial port that connects Fuerteventura with Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Its promenade is excellent, with a wide gastronomic offer, from the fishermen's guild with freshly caught fish, to different bars and restaurants of Canarian and Italian food. Gran Tarajal has all kinds of shops and supermarkets in the town centre, as well as several industrial areas on the outskirts with large supermarkets and other shops. Excursions not to be missed are the climb up the mountain behind the football pitch, from where there is an exceptional view of the village, a visit to the Horno de Cal or the Faro de la Entallada, only 10 kilometres away.
