El Palmar (Teror) – A charming spot in the midlands of Gran Canaria Location and landscape: El Palmar is a charming neighbourhood located at the foot of Pico de Osorio, surrounded by hills such as Riquiañez and Guanchía. Its name comes from the palm groves (Phoenix canariensis) that have grown abundantly in the area since ancient times. It is located in the midlands of the municipality of Teror, in the north of Gran Canaria, which has a long tradition of agriculture and livestock farming. Atmosphere and community: With around 1,500 inhabitants, the neighbourhood has a very family-oriented atmosphere. Most of the houses are detached, many with gardens or small vegetable plots, and many families have lived there for generations. Heritage and culture: The chapel of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves, known as Ermita de la Peña or La Peñita, is a building with roots in the 17th century that houses the venerated image of the Virgin, of Flemish origin. In addition, every summer the patron saint festivities of El Palmar are celebrated from 26 July to 16 August, with traditional pilgrimages, religious offerings, workshops and activities for all ages.
