Domaine Le Poteau is a really special place according to our guests. Our gites are located in a beautiful meadow with open views over the local church spire, vineyards and rolling forest. They have everything you need to relax, slow down and enjoy a great holiday in this wonderful, lesser known corner of France. They are freshly decorated, comfortably furnished (great mattresses) and are light and spacious. Both gites are surrounded by grass and trees, offering plenty of outdoor space. The Gers is a magical area, full of history and character. Our guests are always given a great welcome from the local people, whether joining in one of the many local fetes and wine/armagnac related events or frequenting local shops and cafes. Having the campsite nearby but a whole vineyard away from the gites means that guests can join events if they wish and they often do pop along for meals or musical events in our orchard. However, they have the luxury of returning to their cosy, quiet, comfortable gite at the end of the evening!
We (Alasdair & Fiona) really love welcoming people to Domaine Le Poteau and through friendly, helpful messages try to ensure everyone feels welcome and relaxed prior to arrival. We meet such interesting, warm and kind people. It is always lovely to get great feedback and welcome people back year on year. We also love the fact that so many of our guests come back to us with stories of their adventures and help us to learn more about our adopted region. We are really proud of The Gers and it gives us tremendous pleasure when others love it too.
The Gers is a hidden gem. So many things make it special but it is the people, the landscape and the pace of life here that make a holiday in The Gers just a bit different. It is a peaceful rural idyll, relatively unchanged over the centuries with no heavy industry, lots of beautiful, ancient, preserved villages (4 Plus Beau Villages De France) and some of the most authentic and delicious gastronomy in France. From Le Poteau you can walk to Castelnau D'Auzan, a thriving village with a great restaurant/bar, superb boulangerie, an excellent epicerie and wonderful wine shop.
In summer there are numerous fetes, night markets, musical events, dance and theatre in Castelnau and nearby villages and towns. Locally you can enjoy watersports, fishing, golf, riding and there are endless opportunities for lovely walks (including sections of the Chemin St Jaques) and quiet cycle routes.
There are galleries, museums, cathedrals and churches. There are so many outstanding Domaines producing Armagnac, Floc and of course delicious Gascogne wine, it is impossible to recommend only one but our guests often enjoy trying a few. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.
