Neighbourhood information
The village of Aubazine is perched on a sunny promontory. Houses, shops and hotels are grouped around a shaded square, near the old abbey to which the town owes its existence. This abbey church was built in the second half of the 12th century. It is a Romanesque Cistercian creation which adds to the quality of its architecture that of its furniture: You can discover there, among other things, a famous liturgical cabinet, the tomb of the founder, Saint-Etienne d'Obazine as well as a virgin of pity from the 15th century. The buildings of the abbey, gathered around the garden of the old cloister, still contain intact the chapter house and the monks' work room. A few steps away, in a narrow and wild valley, stand the imposing remains of the female monastery of Coyroux, also founded by Etienne d'Obazine. The commune of Aubazine is rich in historical heritage with many other picturesque sites, such as a dolmen, the Roche Bergère site or the Monks' Canal, a magnificent work of art, which was intended to conduct water on 1, 5Km to the abbey. Culture is also a priority in the village: sacred music in the abbey church, international sculpture symposium (every 2 years since 1997), conferences on heritage, various cultural courses, fairs and various festivals throughout the year. Finally a village from the 12th century turned towards the 21st century: with its multimedia public point (free entry from Tuesday to Saturday) and its approach since 1999 in the citizen Internet, Aubazine, which has been rewarded with the "Internet City" label since 2000, participates to the development of rural internet in Limousin.
