Cornemuse cottage is so called because of the lovely plaster cartouche of an occitan cornemuse-bagpipe above the fireplace in what was the Dean's sitting room, now the principle bedroom of the property which was once the deanery dating to the 12th century. La Doyenné or deanery, of which Cornemuse forms the central part, dates back to the 11th Century when the ramparts of the village were first constructed. After Issigeac was mostly destroyed by raiders in the 15th century many homes were built on the back or behind the remaining rampart walls and the house as it exists today dates from this time. The bishop of Sarlat chose Issigeac as his summer residence and the Bishop's Palace, the church, the tithe house, the judges house, numerous convents and the deanery were built to accommodate the Bishop's court. These prestigious buildings were built with stone while the villagers houses with in the remaining fortified walls were timber built. Issigeac is very fortunate that virtually all the buildings from this period remain intact today and make Issigeac an outstanding example of medieval building and craftsmanship. The Doyené of which Cornemuse forms the central part is on the guided tour listed in the Issigeac tourist information guide and you will often see guided tours walking past the house.
Amanda and Adrian have lived in Dordogne for the past 20 years and run an estate agency branch in Issigeac as well as several other gites in Dordogne and Northern france. They brought up their young family in the area and are able to answer all your questions for a relaxing and comfortable stay. The property is an entire home, offering comfort and privacy with garden in central Issigeac near the old lavoir. Adrain and Amanda live just 10 minutes away and work in the village itself. If you are looking to buy a property in the area, visits can be arranged of properties that match your search criteria.
Issigeac is the pearl of the Southern Perigord, a beautiful medieval village with its stone and timbered houses dating from 1200 to 1450s, busy award-winning Sunday market, Bishop Palace, magnificent church, park with a picturesque river, children's playground, tennis courts, boule park, banks, shops, restaurants, bars, boutiques, grocery shop, newsagents, doctors, dentists, hairdressers, tourist information, post office, fire station, police station, ample parking and all just 20 minutes from Bergerac airport.
