Nestled in the heart of an exceptional heritage site, La Bohème Saint Michel has stood on its timber frame for nearly eight centuries. Its foundations date back to the 10th century, then it was rebuilt in the 13th century and modified again in the 18th… Today, equipped with all modern comforts, it welcomes not only its guests but also a permanent photographic exhibition—surreal and romantic—spread throughout the ground floor and up to the covered terrace, which itself overlooks the gardens of the Saint Michel Abbey. Practically speaking, the house is laid out vertically across three levels. The entrance, kitchen, and dining area are on the ground floor. (The kitchen is fully equipped, including a brand-new bean-to-cup coffee machine!) A staircase leads to the first floor (which also has its own exterior door), opening onto a living room with a piano. This level also hosts the first bedroom, which in turn provides access to the bathroom. A metal spiral staircase leads to the second bedroom on the top floor, which opens directly onto the terrace. The layout of the house gives it a unique charm, though it is not recommended for guests with mobility issues.

La Portanelle is part of old Gaillac, the district that was born along the riverbanks. The Tarn was its lifeline: its economic contribution outweighed the dangers of its unpredictable floods, which often carried away barges and boatmen. The "little gate" that once opened through the city walls was a customs post where goods from downstream passed through—those coming from distant Aquitaine, a region that looked upon the upper lands with a certain disdain. Today, thanks to public and private investment, it has taken on a “trendy” flair. People picnic in the open air on its small squares, dance around the Saint John's fire, set up stalls for the big September flea market, and play cards every afternoon in the Maison du Vieux Gaillac. La Portanelle continues to inspire painters—once it was home to talented potters like Jacques Gallart. On the way to the park, it remains a favorite area for tourists.
