Watch morning sunrises and evening sunsets from the glorious garden surrounded by vineyards. This Maison de Maître is set in the sunny Charente-Maritime of south-western France offering seclusion, authenticity and beautiful surroundings, close to the historic market town of Jonzac.
The setting is indeed idyllic – listen to birdsong as you sip your morning coffee on the terrace and hear the sound of owls as you rest at night. Le Maine au Cerf sleeps up to 10 guests across the house and garden annexe. Guests can expect high standards alongside traditional features. Relax in the elegant living room overlooking the garden, chill out in the TV lounge with its Smart TV and cook up a wealth of regional delights in the wonderful kitchen.
On the first floor there are three pretty bedrooms including the master double with a king-size bed, air-conditioning and ensuite bathroom alongside two further double bedrooms. The attic bedroom also features air-conditioning and there is a delightful garden annexe with double bed, ensuite, sofa and kitchenette for peaceful breakfasts overlooking the grounds. The family bathroom features a roll-top bath and there is a family show room upstairs.
Mary and Phil became owners of Le Maine au Cerf in October 2022.
They were attracted to the house because of its calm and tranquil position, completely surrounded by vineyards. They fell in love with the house as soon as they saw the imposing front façade, the position of the house and privacy, the many original features, large spacious rooms with high ceilings, expansive outdoor space, calmness and wildlife including many types of birds and wild deer.
They have been told that during the war, the Germans occupied the main house whilst the French Resistance were hiding out in one of the large barns. There is evidence of scratched-in graffiti in one of the outdoor buildings.
People staying at Le Maine au Cerf must take advantage of the local Pineau growers who will give tasting experiences and of course they must take in a visit to the Bordeaux Chateaux for the wine tasting. St Emilion Chateaux are particularly good.
Ozillac, just a couple of kilometers away, has its own Depot de Pain.
All the local restaurants are very good and guests will not be disappointed. Fresh prawns from the Jonzac market are delicious and inexpensive!
Bordeaux, about 1 hour away is a must with its fabulous old town, many squares and restaurants. The Marché des Capucins in Bordeaux has a wonderful atmosphere where guests can experience local specialty foods, wine and eat in the many on-site restaurants.
