The house is just 3km from the little 12th century bastide town of Montaigu de Quercy in the Tarn et Garonne region of Southwest France. There is a traditional central square, original defensive walls and a church originating in the 12th century.
The town has everything you need including a supermarket, bakery, pharmacy, doctor, dentist, petrol station and a bank. There are 3 lovely restaurants serving good food in a range of styles and many more restaurants a short drive away in the surrounding villages.
There is a wonderful (and not too touristy) Saturday market in Montaigu selling local food and crafts. On Wednesday there is a smaller market selling local food. The Midi cafe is always busy after market and a nice place to stop for a coffee.
During August there are some excellent evening food markets in the surrounding villages with music and dancing. Great for a night out!
On the outskirts of town there is a swimming lake called Montaigu Plage with water sports, a beach play area, a campsite and a restaurant. There is also a public boule pitch and tennis courts in the centre.
Surrounding Montaigu are the medieval villages of Roquecor, Montcuq and Lauzerte with cafes, restaurants, markets and sight-seeing. Further afield Moissac is worth a visit for its cloisters as are Villeneuve, Cahors and Montauban.
The local farms offer delicious unspoiled produce for sale. There is a dairy farm doing tours and selling raw milk nearby plus a local lavendar farm. Just over the fields is an organic farm selling duck, chicken and organic vegetables and cold-pressed oil.
The Cahors region is famous for Malbec and there are some gorgeous vineyards to explore many of which are offering organic wine. Some offer tours and serve food. We have listed some ideas in our guidebook.
See @peacefulretreatfrance for videos showing some of the local sights.
