Bodmin is a great base for discovering Cornwall as it is positioned between the north and south coasts. The dramatic north coast is a surfers paradise whilst the sub tropical south coast has calmer seas and very different scenery. For any cycling enthusiasts or walkers, the Camel Trail path is nearby and is idyllic for exploring some stunning scenery and wildlife. Depending on how energetic you are feeling, you can follow the trail to Wadebridge which is the next town and has an abundance of shops, eateries and watering holes. While on route the Camel trail passes The Camel Valley Vineyard and here you can sample award winning wines whilst capturing the breathtaking scenery on a summer's afternoon. The trail also continues from Wadebridge to the vibrant north Cornwall fishing port of Padstow, the home of many famous restaurants.
The ancient town of Bodmin has many attractions including the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway, which leaves the old town station and chugs down the valley to the mainline branch, what a way to tour the county. If you are looking for some local Cornish history, the newly renovated Bodmin Jail is full of it. The jail was built in 1779 and, after years of sitting derelict, it has recently been transformed into a luxurious hotel with a museum, restaurant and champagne bar. The surrounding Bodmin Moor is where you can find Jamaica Inn, immortalised in Daphne Du Maurier’s book of the same name. The stunning National Trust property of Lanhydrock House is close by and has many activities throughout the year.
