Neighbourhood information

The apartment is situated in Chester’s old industrial district, very close to the Shropshire Union Canal. Just a short walk along the canal (past the original Griffiths Corn Mill building which dates from 1830) takes you to all that Chester has to offer including the Cathedral, City Walls, Eastgate Clock and Roman Amphitheatre. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the residential character of Egerton Street and the immediate surrounding area became mingled with industrial enterprises due to its proximity to the canal and the railway. For example, it was home to the famous Maltbys Leadworks in 1780, the nationally important Chester Hydraulic Company, Egerton Street Saw Mill, and Egerton Iron & Brass Foundry, which was demolished in 1910 when Egerton Street school was built on the site. The school was designed by John Douglas and W. T. Lockwood, and survives to this day as a private nursery school. It is one of Chester’s many listed buildings. John Douglas was an English architect who designed over 500 buildings in Cheshire, North Wales, and northwest England. Chester contains a number of his structures, the most admired of which are his half-timbered black-and-white buildings and the Eastgate Clock. Throughout his career, he attracted commissions from wealthy landowners and industrialists, especially the local Grosvenor family of Eaton Hall.
