Tynemouth is the most popular seaside village in the North East, featuring a vibrant and picturesque village centre with independent cafes, bars, and shops. All of Tynemouth's beaches are well-known and well loved, and form part of a surfer's paradise. The beaches are safe to visit and swim at, with lifeguards on duty, and children enjoy rockpooling towards the old Tynemouth Pool. There is also a popular and friendly community who enjoy open water swims at Longsands. There are also saunas, and two cafes for a pick-me-up whilst you're down there. For children, Tynemouth has seaside attractions, like mini golf and inflatables, and an aquarium on the seafront. There is also a Victorian park which is lovely to visit at any age. South Shields, visible across the river from the apartment, has a funfair and a children's park - please ask if you want directions here by car or public transport (including a ferry across the Tyne). For history fans, there is the Tynemouth Priory, which can be seen by looking left on the street outside the apartment, but is a key part of the village architecture. Tynemouth is well blessed with beautiful Georgian and Victorian buildings, and the Collingwood Monument is visible from the apartment’s front windows. Locally, there are always entertainment events. In July, there is the annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival, encompassing the whole village with street fairs. The most prominent part of the festival is the headline open air concert at the Priory, which has featured artists like Elbow, Paul Weller, and The Proclaimers. Other events include a traditional theatre with many performances and a January pantomime. Local bars and pubs have live music and quizzes all year. Tynemouth has a beautiful Victorian station with glass ceilings and wide platforms. There are many shops, bars and restaurants here, and every weekend there is a wonderful market spanning both platforms. This is also home to the Metro which can get you to Newcastle in 20 minutes.
