In Bury St Edmunds you can stroll through history with medieval architecture, beautiful Georgian Squares, stunning St Edmundsbury Cathedral (the only cathedral in Suffolk) , the ruins of an 11th century Monastery, once a place of pilgrimage and one of the most important in medieval Europe, the Award winning Abbey Gardens created on 1831 originally in the same style as the Royal Botanical Gardens in Brussels and St Mary’s Church, directly opposite the apartment, the resting place of Mary Tudor to name but a few. Indulge yourself in fine dining and contemporary cuisine or simply enjoy a pint at The Nutshell, Britain’s smallest pub. The Green King Brewery – brewing since 1799 offers friendly guides and the opportunity to view Bury Edmunds from their roof. Catch a show, concert, recital at the beautifully restored Regency Theatre Royal (one of only eight Grade I listed theatres within the UK) or The Apex Arts centre. A short 10 minute drive from the town is the beautiful National Trust owned Ickworth House & Park; home to the Hervey Family. Well worth a visit, this magnificent Italianate Palace with its classical Rotunda is set amongst 1800 parkland. Within 30 mins drive are the charming wool towns of Lavenham and Long Melford or Newmarket, considered to be the birthplace and global centre of thoroughbred horse racing at Newmarket Racecourse. Bury St Edmunds is an ideal base from which to enjoy the wonderful variety that Suffolk has to offer.
