Perched on 800-million-year-old cliffs, Dounhuila is a tranquil retreat inspired by its wild surroundings and the legend of a ninth-century princess. With sweeping views of Sleat, Ardnamurchan, and the Small Isles, our home blends elegance, comfort, and carefully curated local art to make your stay truly special.
Hello, my name is Ben. I moved from Brighton to Skye at the age of 18 to pursue my love of all things wilderness and photography. After many years in the mountains, alongside being a carpenter, I am really excited to be able to welcome people to Dounhuila - a home that we have lived in and, in our opinion, in the most special part of the island.
Glasnakille is a peaceful township on the Isle of Skye, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty and close proximity to some of the island’s most iconic attractions. Overlooking the Sleat peninsula and small isles, the setting provides an authentic highland experience, with the ocean stretching endlessly before you, the colours changing with the seasons (of which are usually all experienced within one day!).
Glasnakille is known for Spar Cave, famous for its limestone formations and cathedral-like walls. A short walk from the cottage, this hidden gem is only accessible at low tide so be sure to plan ahead. Just a five minute drive away lies the village of Elgol, where you can embark on a boat trip to the stunning Loch Coruisk, often described as one of Scotland’s most beautiful lochs. Elgol also serves as the starting point for many scenic hikes into the Cuillin mountains.
For dining, Elgol offers a few lovely options. Cafe Elgol is open daily from 8am-6pm, serving breakfast, lunch, hot drinks, cake and delicious homemade ice cream. Down at the pier, you’ll find The Creel, a charming spot offering local seafood, ice cream and drinks to go. In the evening, Elgol Bistro - open Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm - offers fresh, homemade dishes, perfect for a relaxed dinner after a day of exploring. For a more indulgent experience, consider making a reservation at one of Skye’s renowned restaurants, such as Elgol’s Coruisk House, Kinloch Lodge or The Three Chimneys. Please do ask us for our personal recommendations as we have tried and tested most, if not all, of the dining options on the island!
Beyond its local charm, Glasnakille is a 40 minute drive from Broadford, and just over an hour away from Portree.
With its tranquil setting and proximity to natural wonders like Spar Cave and Loch Coruisk, and a myriad of wildlife such as deer, Highland cows, golden eagles and so much more, Glasnakille offers a peaceful, homely base to explore the magic of the Isle of Skye.
