MESSAGE FROM THE OWNER We are gradually restoring Greyfriars, and the grounds, as brief Custodians in its long History. It is a huge labour of love, but a privilege to live and work in such a lovely corner of East Sussex, so we enjoy welcoming our guests to the recently restored wing of Eagles Nest, where they can enjoy the peace and tranquility of this majestic ancient place, but with all the creature comforts one can imagine. It is a great pleasure to see guests arriving in need of time away, to hear how rejuvenated they feel after a holiday here, whether they take advantage of the many varied places to visit or just while away the time walking to the beach, wine tasting at the vineyard next door, and relaxing in the private garden hot tub. As we are in a very sunny area of the Uk, in the summer months we slip off to the local Winchelsea beach for a swim and often see grey seals lazing on the sand or swimming. When we can, we sometimes offer personal tours of the Abbey ruins which are not open to the public.
Located on the edge of picturesque Winchelsea, with the New Inn pub, farm shop and spectacular Gothic church all within a 5 minute walk. Fancy a leisurely start to the day? Wander past the stained glass windows of the church to collect a fresh coffee and home baked bread and pastries from The Little Shop to eat on the terrace overlooking the parkland. Medieval Winchelsea is one of the best preserved towns in this Area of Outstanding Natural beauty. The cellar tours are a must see, an interesting peek into its smuggling history alongside the museum, magnificent stone arches and panoramic views from the Lookout. The award winning Charles Palmer Wines, are on the next hill a 20 minute walk away, hosted by the very knowledgeable team, the wine tasting and the much sought after wine and cheese pairings make a great afternoon. 2 miles away is the Cinque port of Rye, with twisting cobbled streets, a tidal harbour, fantastic bars, restaurants, antique shops and independent stores. The closest beach is a 5 minute drive, and Camber Sands famous for its sand dunes and soft golden sand is 5 miles.
