One of the main attractions of Kingussie is its stunning natural beauty. Surrounded by mountains, forests, and rolling hills, the town is in one of Scotland's most picturesque parts. Whether you’re interested in hiking, cycling, fishing, or simply taking in the views, you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied in and around Kingussie.
In addition to its natural attractions, Kingussie is also steeped in history. The town dates to the 18th century, and its rich heritage is evident in its many historic buildings and landmarks. There's plenty to explore from the ruins of the 13th-century Ruthven Barracks to the 18th-century Old Parish Church. With its lively cultural scene, including regular festivals, Kingussie is a great place to experience the best Scottish culture and hospitality.
The Ruthven Barracks were constructed in the 1700s to watch over the valley’s population and keep them in line. Many people know that the famous Jacobite Rebellion of Bonnie Prince Charlie ended at the Battle of Culloden in nearby Inverness. Ruthven Barracks, however, is the site of the final victory of the rebel forces. Here, the Jacobite troops stormed the walls and sacked the stronghold, setting it alight to buy their comrades time to flee. Today, these imposing ruins remind us of our history and how times have changed. They also have some stunning views over the valley!
The River Spey flows through the town, and several lochs are nearby, including Loch Gynack and Loch Insh. The area is also home to a variety of wildlife, including red deer, ospreys, and golden eagles.
