Property information

Originally built as large family houses during the Victorian period. The bedrooms are those same rooms used by Victorian families, and on the top floor, the were the staff rooms, of the maids, and butler. Downstairs, the reception room and Dining room are the formal lounge or Parlour, where visiting friends were welcomed. In the lower floor, the Basement, were the kitchen with store rooms, staff room and Butlers office. The family would entertain their guests and friends on the ground floor. The parents would have their bedroom and sitting room on the 1st floor. The children would sleep on the second floor. The small rooms on the mezzanine floors were the bathrooms. Coal would be delivered regularly until the 1970's by horse and cart, and would be stored in cellars under the pavement. This would be used to heat water for the baths, and water would be taken up in buckets to fill a bath. Every room had a fire place or chimney, and coal fires would be lit in every room. The chimneys are still there, but were blocked-up. Now we are re-opening these during room renovations. We still use the chimney in the Lounge near the rec

Neighbourhood information

In Kensington, we have the fantastic Holland Park, Westfield London for a shopping paradise, Portobello Road by bus, and you can also visit the riverside along the Thames by going west to Hammersmith and Chiswick. We are in a residential area, away from noisy and busy tourist zones, with our local high street around the corner, called Kensington High Street. This is also the Royal Borough, as we have Kensington Palace nearby, as well as other landmark buildings, such as Victoria & Albert museum, Science Museum, and Albert Hall for concerts. Lots of local cafes are in the area, and we have some of London best pubs; you need to ask me about these pubs, as they not on the tourist trail!
