Madge House
Madge House is of historical interest and a grade 2 listed building, it was built in 1703 originally as a coach house in the reign of Queen Anne, it was later purchased by Erasmus Darwin grandfather of Charles Darwin for his two daughters to run a school for ladies. Later it was a doctors surgery and then a care home which closed. Madge House was then renovated in 2008 and turned into private apartments which were sold off. It was again renovated in 2017 by the current owner with luxury fittings and furniture. The property has private parking with electronic entry (PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ENTRANCE TO MADGE HOUSE IS AT THE FRONT OF THE PROPERTY, NOT AT THE BACK OR THE SIDE). The entrance to the property has video entry system and door code for your comfort. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS NO INTERNET ACCESS.
We hope you enjoy staying in this beautiful apartment lovingly restored by myself, it has a wealth of facilities to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. The convenience of Madge house's location in the town centre sits in an enviable position to all that Ashbourne has to offer, slight road noise heard but the property is well insulated, warm and cozy, home from home with an abundance of history.
The History of Ashbourne Little has changed in Ashbourne since the 18th Century and it is one of Derbyshire’s finest old market towns, combining a medieval street pattern and historic buildings with a wealth of high quality shops. The cobbled market place, hidden alleys and yards are a delight to explore, and the wide and elegant Church Street is considered to be the finest street of Georgian buildings in Derbyshire. Many important and famous people have coloured the history of Ashbourne including Dr. Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), Izaak Walton, Thomas Moore and George Eliot. Princess Victoria (later to be Queen Victoria) passed through the town in 1832 and took a ‘comfort break’ at the Green Man. Ashbourne is home to the famous annual Shrovetide football game which has received Royal recognition by two Princes of Wales. The ball was ‘turned up’ by Prince Edward in 1928 and by Prince Charles in 2003. Ashbourne became a busy and fashionable social centre for the wealthy during the Georgian period, with six coaching roads meeting here, including the route from London to Carlisle.
