Modja Modja House
Each of our bedrooms at Modja Modja House are carefully curated to champion good design, art, and craft. Every detail you will find, marks a point in this project's journey –symbolising friendships and commissions, acknowledging local brands, and celebrating iconic design pieces– all of which we hope will become a step in your own uncurbed exploration! As well as welcoming guests, Modja Modja House is our family home, shared with our young child. Mornings here begin with the gentle rhythms of everyday life, adding to the warmth and character of your stay, while we remain mindful to ensure your time with us is peaceful and relaxing. Through the dining room, hallways and bedrooms you will see origional artworks from friends of Modja Modja House, including Åbäke, Tomoko Azumi, Martin Beck, Amy Croft, Philippe Dupuy, Jutta Goessl, Rio Kobayashi, Tony Mullin and Yuri Suzuki to mention a few. Sharing the depth of thought, intrigue and joy that art and design can bring, is at the heart of what we do, so feel free to stop us and discuss. In all our bathrooms we are proud to provide the products of local, award-winning skincare specialists Haeckels. Additionally in every bedroom you will find handmade organic wool mattresses & beds from Naturalmat. Prioritizing sustainability, quality craftsmanship, and natural ingredients over unnecessary extravagance. Breakfast is served from 9am in our dining area and includes freshly baked croissants from a neighbourhood bakery, seasonal fruit with yoghurt and freshly ground coffees or teas. The experience of breakfast is enhanced when served on Mervyn Gers hand crafted ceramics. We are only able to accept a minimum of 2 night bookings.
Why Modja Modja? It is Japanese slang for messy (slightly unruly) curly hair —yes, that’s mine!—but it also conjures up notions of uncurbed exploration, or inquisitive looking which we hope to support for both our B&B guests and resident artists. Modja Modja House is a fresh take on the seaside bed and breakfast experience, founded by Artist and Curator Amy Croft. Sparked by an idea of how creative residencies, art production, tourism and small scale businesses could support and inspire each other, Croft designed and renovated this 1830’s sweet shop in Cliftonville Margate into an intimate and unique 3 bedroom guesthouse. As well as welcoming guests, Modja Modja House is also our family home, shared with our young child. This means you can expect the warmth and character of a lived-in space, alongside our commitment to making your stay as peaceful and special as possible.
One of my favourite things is walking part of the Viking Coastal Trail — it’s such a beautiful way to take in the coastline, and you can tailor it to your mood or energy. You can start from Modja Modja House and head toward Broadstairs or even on to Ramsgate if you’re feeling ambitious. The stretch past Botany Bay is especially stunning, with its chalk cliffs and peaceful beaches. And if you don’t fancy walking back, you can just hop on the Loop bus and be back in Margate in no time. Another lovely (and very Margate) experience is trying out one of the seaside saunas which are a short stroll from us. The People Care. Planet Care. (formerly Haeckels) community sauna is free — a brilliant thing for the town. Another option is Sea Scrub Sauna which sits right on the main sands and is a really special spot to warm up and take in the sea view. Just around the corner from Modja Modja House, I always point guests toward the Shell Grotto — it’s on our doorstep and feels like stepping into a secret world. On your way, have a poke around Scott’s junk shop — it’s a bit of a treasure trove. And of course, for anyone curious about Margate’s art scene, there’s Turner Contemporary, but also some fantastic independent spaces like Carl Freedman Gallery, Quench Gallery, and the Tracey Emin Foundation Studios, which are right at the bottom of our road. There’s always something unexpected to see.
