We spent Christmas at Salvin House with family and the property was perfect. Great facilities and extremely comfy beds. The pub directly across the road and hotel/restaurant next door ideal too!

The house was very well equipped and spacious. It easily accommodated our family group. Everything was neat and tidy and clean. Being opposite the Cumberland was definitely a bonus.

The decor was lovely. The house was very clean. The bed linens excellent and beds really comfortable. Loved the log burner. Little hotel straight across the road had good home cooked food at reasonable prices.

Our holiday let is a haven of Georgian elegance in the heart of England's highest market town. With a history dating back over 200 years, yet offering all modern comforts, Salvin House is a perfect country retreat in Alston. Located on the Cumberland-Northumberland border, at the heart of the North Pennines AONB, our elegant self-catering cottage can accommodate up to eight people. With a private country cottage garden featuring wood-fired pizza oven and charcoal grill, perfectly proportioned living and dining rooms, wood burning stove, a fully equipped kitchen and four comfortable bedrooms, each with its own unique decorative theme, you will feel instantly relaxed when you walk through the front door of Salvin House. Our professional housekeeping team will prepare everything in readiness for your arrival, including a locally sourced welcome pack (with our compliments), logs for the stove, fluffy towels and crisp cotton linen on all the beds. So you can focus on relaxing and enjoying your rural surroundings. Salvin House can cater for up to 10 guests, but as our dining table only seats 8 and the additional beds are sofa chairs, we only accept parties with a maximum of 8 adults. We welcome up to two small or medium-sized dogs, so long as their owners are properly trained and well-behaved, of course.
Our holiday cottage is located in the historic market town of Alston, at the heart of the North Pennines AONB. Looking at Alston today, it's hard to believe it was once a thriving lead mining centre with more than 6,000 inhabitants and 12 pubs. Today, the town is better known for its historic centre and the stunning countryside that surrounds it, offering a perfect location for walking, cycling and exploration. Alston has everything you need from a local butcher to a petrol station and a fish & chip shop. There are still five pubs to choose from, plus some lovely restaurants or, if self-catering is your thing, there's two decent supermarkets and an independent wholefood store. The South Tyne Trail footpath is literally across the road from your front door, or why not let the train take the strain on the South Tynedale Railway. Explore the local Ashgill Force waterfall, Epiacum Roman Fort or take a tour of the Nenthead Mines. For those who like to attend church, there are regular services at the historic St Augustine of Canterbury Church.
