What makes New Galloway Cottages extra special is that Stroan and Skerrow are owned by New Galloway Community Enterprises, who also own and operate the excellent licensed village shop next door.
When you book one of our holiday cottages or purchase your groceries and supplies from the village shop, every pound of profit goes straight back into the local community. So you’ll be doing your bit to keep the village the thriving hub that we are proud it still is today.
New Galloway Community Enterprises bought and renovated the shop and holiday accommodation (then a private home) on behalf of the community in 2017 after raising money through a Share Launch and through Big Lottery funding. You can read the whole story here. If you’d like to stay part of our story, you’re more than welcome to buy one or more Shares in New Galloway Community Enterprises and become a Member. You can see the details of investment and membership here. Since 2017, the shop has gone from strength-to-strength and we’re so proud of our staff and volunteers over the years who have made it all happen.

The smallest Royal Burgh in Scotland, New Galloway is the perfect location for exploring south-west Scotland. As well as the Community Shop which is in the heart of New Galloway, there’s a Post Office too. Across the road you’ll find a park with a playing field and a picturesque picnic area next to the river. Then there’s our very own Arts venue, cafe and gift shop, The CatStrand – just a few doors down from the holiday cottages. Also, look out for events hosted within the historic Town Hall.
With walks in the forest behind the golf course as well as wild swimming and fishing from the west bank of Loch Ken, there is plenty to keep you active during your stay. Not forgetting the Golf Club and Kenmure Castle – all within walking distance. If you hop in your car (or on your bike), you can visit the Galloway Activity Centre, explore Galloway Forest Park (an International Dark Sky Park) and venture along the Raiders’ Road to Otter Pool. All of this is just waiting for you to discover!
Roads head out in five directions from New Galloway:
To the south is the food town of Castle Douglas. The high street in this busy market town is dotted with independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Nearby Threave Castle and Threave Garden are worth a visit whilst you’re here.
To the south-west is the artists’ town, Kirkcudbright. A beautiful harbour town with independent shops, a castle, museum, cafes, swimming pool and more. This vibrant community has lots going on, with farmers markets, events and exhibitions scheduled throughout the year.
To the west is Newton Stewart, another thriving town with a leisure centre and a unique art deco cinema. It’s reached via the A712 or the Queen’s Way, a spectacularly scenic route through the Galloway Forest Park. It goes past Clatteringshaws Loch, numerous picnic areas, Otter Pool, The Red Deer Range, Black Loch and beyond. There are lots of great walking and cycling routes here.
To the north is the busier seaside resort of Ayr....
