Tanybryn is a 17th C Welsh cottage, which has all its original beams and a hazel and willow chimney in an inglenook fireplace with a wood burning stove. The cottage is non smoking, but there are seats outside if any guests like to smoke. The tv reception uses an ethernet cable and a fire stick, there is also a large selection of dvds. The emphasis at Tanybryn is being outdoors and enjoying the space and views. There is a lot of wildlife, birds including red kites, many wild flowers and toads, newts, frogs and most evenings, bats. There are swings and a tree platform in the woods and a large box of outdoor toys. Please note that all wooden items, including the bridge and deck, will be slippery when wet. I would suggest bringing wellies, certainly for the children. We accept two well behaved dogs in the cottage and one well behaved small to medium dog in the barn. Please do not allow dogs upstairs or on the beds as the next guests may be allergic. The kitchen is galley shaped being long and narrow, but contains everything you could need. A kettle, toaster, microwave, cooker, Rayburn solid fuel stove which can burn anthracite, a slow cooker, steamer washing machine and a tassimo coffee maker. The dining room has a drop leaf table and chairs and a wood burning stove. The radiators on the walls run off the Rayburn but there are electric heaters in the lounge and dining room, which have an open door and window detector. This will turn the heaters off if it detects a sudden drop in temperature. The cottage and the barn both have these heaters which I can control from home, so I turn them on before your arrival to make sure the property is warm. The hot tub is for the use of both properties but only one property is let at a time unless both are wanted by the same group, so you don’t have to share the land or the tub with anyone else! I can also control the tub from home , so if you want to use it I can turn it up to be ready for your arrival. Shut gates!
I love to share Tanybryn cottage and the barn, Ysgubor, with guests. It mainly suits people who love wildlife, bird watching, Cycling, walking and hiking. The Cambrian Mountains are above Tregaron which is six miles away and a national park also a red kite centre and Lyn Brianne reservoir. There is fishing and golf available, but one of my favourite outings is to Newquay on the coast, to go out in a boat, dogs welcome, to see the seals, dolphins and if lucky, green turtles. Another favourite of mine is Llanachaeron, a Welsh farm owned by the NT, which, due to wars and politics, has mainly been run by women, a beautiful walled garden and very unusual house, also a very good tearoom! From here it’s only five miles to Aberaeron, a harbour town with a good selection of shops and an excellent restaurant on the harbour called the harbour master, also a restaurant selling honey ice cream. Tregaron has a Welsh gold shop and useful food stores, also the Talbot hotel serves good food and Welsh beers and cheeses. My dog loves Tanybryn and the fields are enclosed with stock proof fencing, but I do suggest walking the perimeter just to check all is well. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay and like many others, come again!
The area is between Tregaron and Lampeter and is mostly used as grazing for sheep and Cattle. Tanybryn is the last property, left at the fork, up a half mile track. The track has suffered badly due to the heavy rainfalls we have been having, but is passable with care. I go up it in my bmw Mini Cooper without a problem, just go slowly and be careful. My neighbours have children so use it every day for school runs and shopping in a people carrier. It improves as you go up! There are five properties on the track, including Tanybryn, then over the hill at the back of the cottage is Cefen Garthenor, the original farm house, whose owner is rewilding its 240 acres. The bridle path, fenced off, at the bottom of Tanybryns field leads to this land and guests are welcome to ramble across it as long as they shut gates behind them. There is a small herd of Galloway cattle and two Tamworth pigs on the land to keep down growth so they should be left alone. You can scan a poster on the gate to check where the cattle are as they all wear collars. The council try very hard to encourage people to recycle, so to promote this they only collect black bag waste every three weeks. Please rinse tins etc. and use the clear recycle bags provided for cardboard, paper, plastic and tins, no food or glass. This is collected from the bottom of the track on a Friday morning. The glass goes in the black box by the log store and food left out in the woods for the animals to eat. Please take dog waste with you when you go out and put it in a dog bin. If you do have any black bag rubbish, again, no food, please take it to the tip in Lampeter on the A485 on the left, just as you come into Lampeter. Lampeter has an excellent Indian restaurant, a large co-op and a Sainsbury’s. Asda do deliver but there is a charge and I am told that Tesco are now delivering as well. There is an excellent Welsh butchers shop opposite the university, they can even tell you which farm the meat came from! Enjoy
