The property is a Grade II listed, 2 story mid terrace thatched cottage approximately 350 years old. There is a formal garden at the front with a leat (run off from the watermill in the village) running across the garden. While the property has 2 bathrooms with separate loos, one bathroom and loo are outside. The back garden is approximately 1/4 acre and is a delight for dogs. Across the footbridge over the river Taw there is a meadow with direct access to Dartmoor. Patti's Wood: How I spend your money. I have been working over the last 3 years with a retired forester who lives in the village, and a field I own of approximately 4 acres, on the other side of the Bridleway. It has been planted with native trees and shrubs, which include alders, poplars, beech, English oak, hazel, hawthorn, willow, etc. There are approximately 100 trees in situ and the wood is my own green initiative, established to absorb carbon dioxide and increase the habitat for local wildlife. I am funding the project through some of the money that you pay for accommodation. It is a gift to the next generation and is named after my wife of 40 years, who died in 2019.
I am a retired widower and hosting appeals to me as I interact with interesting people who enjoy the peace and beauty of Dartmoor. This is our family house and it house has been available for short term lets from mid 1990, when we stayed there, and we bought it from those owners and renovated it while we were living there. Following my wife's death, I am renting it out as these old thatch cottages need warm bodies to keep the circulation going.
The house is situated in the village of Sticklepath within the northern end of Dartmoor National Park 20 miles SW of Exeter. Sticklepath has 2 pubs and a village shop, 50 yards from the property, and is also home to Finch Foundry a water driven tool manufacturer under the care of the National Trust. There are 3 villages nearby and the market town of Okehampton is 4 miles away. There is good access to Dartmoor ay various places in the immediate area.
