The name North Elmham comes from the Old English, meaning "village where elms grow" and is first mentioned in 1035. Lying on the west bank of the River Wensum with its Medieval church of St Mary, which stands next to the grounds of the old cathedral and the ruins of the Bishops Chapel close by. Fantastic countryside walks abound from the doorstep and enthusiastic cyclists have lanes galore to explore, as well as Bintree woods which are just down the private lane from The Chapel.
Pensthorpe Natural Park, as featured in BBC's Springwatch, is only a few miles away and is a lovely place to spend a day, for both young and old.
Thursford, just eleven miles away, is home to one of the world's most significant steam and fairground museums, The Thursford Collection, and also hosts a spectacular Christmas show each year, popular with visitors from far and wide. The market town of
Fakenham, also nearby, has a good choice of supermarkets and also an excellent market every Thursday, and a Saturday Farmer's Market once a month. There's also a bowling alley and a very well regarded National Hunt racecourse with a popular Ladies Day each June. Holt with its pretty independent shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants is an easy drive away. For something very different try Norfolk Padel near Fakenham, where you can hire state-of-the-art courts for this fast-growing racquet sport.
