Cosy and quaint barn conversion for 2, located within a conservation area in a quiet rural hamlet near Matlock, only 15 minutes from the M1 and surrounded by a network of country lanes and public footpaths. An ideal base for an interesting and varied holiday exploring the nearby spectacular Peak District and the stunning Derbyshire Dales. The Cruck Barn adjoins the owner’s property and is accessed via electric gates onto a shared driveway with your own dedicated parking space for one vehicle. There’s an EV charger (additional charge) and secure storage for pedal bikes. Stone steps lead to your private entrance - a stable door opens into a charming open plan living area with a modern, fully equipped kitchen, dining and sitting areas with a tv, log burner and the original mediaeval Cruck beam. Upstairs the comfortable and spacious double bedroom with king-sized bed, en-suite shower, sofa bed and TV gives access onto a balcony with views across 5 counties. Outside in the south-facing gardens there are numerous areas to sit and relax as well as up in our 2 acre meadow where you are also welcome to exercise up to 2 well-behaved dogs. Next to the barn is your own outdoor dining area with BBQ. By arrangement you can also have access to a washing machine, tumble dryer and small freezer in the owner’s garage next to the barn. Note: Due to the steps and steep banks the property is not suitable for those with limited mobility. The rural nature of the location means that you will need transport and there are no facilities such as shops or pubs in Wheatcroft itself just a small number of residential properties.
We’re a husband and wife team and have recently moved here having fallen in love with the beautiful landscape of the Peak District and the Derbyshire Dales. We’ve spent over a year exploring the area, walking, cycling and sampling the local fare so are able to give advice about where to go and what to do although we are sure we’ll learn a lot from our guests too! We’re really excited about welcoming visitors to The Cruck Barn which was successfully run as a holiday let for many years by the previous owners receiving excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. Whilst we also live onsite there is plenty of space in our garden and areas where you can enjoy your privacy and the wonderful views.
Whether you enjoy walking, cycling, rock climbing, bird watching, visiting historic homes and gardens or simply soaking up the amazing views, there is a variety of pursuits to enjoy. The Barn is 4 miles south east of the popular market towns of Matlock and Matlock Bath. Set in the beautiful wooded gorge of the river Derwent, Matlock has a range of pubs, restaurants, shops, cafes and supermarkets and attractions including Gulliver’s Kingdom, the Mining Museum and the Heights of Abraham - from where you can admire the magnificent views after travelling up by cable car or an exhilarating hike. For local supplies - a grocers, butchers, post office and a sourdough bakery/coffee house - Crich is only a 3 mile drive by car. You could walk there or to the nearest pub - The White Hart which is just 1 mile away. You might also visit the National Tramway Museum at Crich or Richard Arkwright’s Cromford Mills to find out more about the industrial past. Day trips to Chatsworth, Haddon and Hardwick Halls are a must, as well as visits to the towns of Bakewell and Buxton which are to the north of here. The villages of Eyam (the Plague Village), Hartington, Ashford-in-the Water and Tissington, famous for their well dressings, are all within easy reach. Just south of Matlock is the start of the High Peak Cycle Trail or the Monsal Trail and Monsal Head are just 30 minutes away by car. Slightly further a field you’ll find the delightful towns of Hathersage with nearby Stannage Edge, as well as Castleton - home to Peveril Castle, the Blue John Caves and not far from Mam Tor or you might want to tackle the highest Peak - Kinder Scout. Carsington Water, where you can hire bikes, kayaks and canoes is 11 miles drive. The Dam Buster’s Lady Bower reservoir is within striking distance with wonderful walks, cycle tracks and 360 degree views of Kinder Scout. Further afield still is the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Calke Abbey and the Barbara Hepworth museum. The list goes on!
