Kirkby Lonsdale sits within a meander of the River Lune, 14 miles from Kendal and the Lake District, 15 miles from Lancaster City Centre and just 7 miles from Ingleton, where you will find the famous Ingleton Caves.
The town of Kirkby Lonsdale is also a popular attraction due to the historic Devils Bridge (10 minutes walk), a towering three-arch stone bridge over the river Lune, dating back to the 12th century. The river and the adjacent park are both well-visited in the summer months for swimming, BBQ, or a picnic. Sundays see motorbikes from far and wide gather.
The town is steeped in history, including Salt Pie Lane, formally known as ‘Cattle Market Yard, until 1911 when a local resident of Cattle Market Yard, an entrepreneur, made hot, salted mutton pies for sale to the traders. It's said that after eating the salty pies, people felt it immediately necessary to quench their raging thirst and adjourn to the nearby ‘Green Dragon’ (now The Snooty Fox pub). What they didn’t realise was that the landlord was a relation!
Fortunately, there is still a good choice of pubs, as well as the Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery and Beer Hall, which often has live music events. In December, the Kirkby Lonsdale Christmas Market is also a big draw to visitors.
The lots to see and do in Kirkby Lonsdale and the nearby town and villages that you will be sure to enjoy your stay.
