If you visit Mevagissey, you’re just a short drive away from The Lost Gardens of Heligan, a fascinating Victorian garden that was rediscovered and restored in the 1990s. One of the people behind the restoration went on to create The Eden Project, an absolutely unique attraction with a bewildering array of plants and trees from all corners of the earth. The architecture is as spectacular as the plant life.
Restormel Castle is a fascinating 13th century ruin, where you can still pick out the main rooms of the castle and enjoy the views of the River Fowey below. It’s a good spot for a picnic – keep your eyes peeled for the famous black pheasants that live here. A few miles down the River Fowey you’ll find another beautiful spot; Catherine’s Castle. Part of a pair of small artillery forts built by Henry VIII.
For a grander vision of Cornwall’s history, Lanhydrock is a fully preserved late Victorian mansion, where you can see the grandeur of the family rooms upstairs, along with all the paraphernalia of the working kitchens below. You can hire bicycles here to cycle through the extensive grounds and beyond too.
