Property information

Newly built in 2022, the Ironworks complex sits in the ground of the former industrial Ironworks on the banks of the River Leven. The Ironworks produced iron and steel from 1711 until its closure in 1966. Now, the attractive and modern complex consists of several single—and double-story apartments that have been built to a high standard, and most, including No 5 - aptly named The Smelting Pot, benefit from views of the River Leven. 3 Bedrooms: 2x double and 1x single. Pets are not permitted. Parking for two cars. Parties and noisy events are strictly prohibited. A travel cot, high chair, and stair gate are not provided.

Neighbourhood information

Backbarrow was once a busy mill town with many corn mills dotted along the river. In 1711, the trade turned to iron due to the large iron blast furnace built right here where the complex is, known as the Ironworks. Alongside the cotton mills, Backbarrow was a thriving area. In 1868, an extension of the Furness Railway was built through the village to transport iron and other products from the mills. Though the line was closed in the 1960s with the demise of the forge, the section from Haverthwaite to Lakeside, which passes through Backbarrow, remains open as a heritage railway—now referred to as the Haverthwaite Steam Railway. The village is now primarily residential, but the village's central location makes it ideal for exploring the Lake District or perhaps visiting Cartmel (8-miles) to watch the horseraces. Nearby in Ulverston (7-miles), passing by the Sir John Barrow Monument on Hoad Hill (a replica of Eddystone Lighthouse), you can take the Coastal Route to Barrow with Conishead Priory and miles of shingle beach. Head down to Roa Island, wander around the lifeboat station, take the little ferry over to Piel Island, and visit the King of Piel and the Seals. Attractions within 3 miles include the Lakeside Aquarium, Haverthwaite Railway, Lakeland Motor Museum, and Windermere Lake Cruises, which connect Windermere, Brockhole Visitors Centre, and Ambleside.
