The White Barn is a refurbished, traditional weather-boarded barn in the beautiful village of Hilton. With tasteful, comfortable furnishings and plenty of character, it provides ground floor accommodation with an ensuite bedroom and light and airy open plan sitting room where French doors open on to the private patio garden.
The Barn is a self-contained unit adjacent to the owners' Victorian house and garden. It is privately owned and family managed. It is well situated, close to the historic market towns of St Ives, Huntingdon and Ely, and within easy access of Cambridge. It lies in the heart of beautiful Fenland scenery with its many historic and wildlife attractions.
The White Barn has up-to-date equipment including dishwasher and washer dryer, digital TV and wif-fi internet access with super-fast fibre optic broadband. The bedroom has a double bed with a comfortable high quality mattress. The ensuite bathroom is completely tiled and has modern fittings, including bath, thermostatic power shower and heated towel rail. The White Barn is entirely on the ground floor, with only one step up from the level path and driveway.
There is a delightful patio garden, with table and chairs, a small pear tree and plenty of flowering plants. Car parking is on the drive immediately in front of the barn.
There is a lock box by the entry door with the key so that you can let yourselves in at any time after the arrival time (2pm). It may be possible to arrange an earlier arrival time - please get in touch!
I am Claire, and I run the White Barn along with my husband, Cameron. We live next door to the Barn and we're on hand to help you with anything you need, but the White Barn is entirely self-contained with its own garden and separate entrance from the driveway, so you will have complete privacy. I work as a lecturer for the Open University and my husband is a retired local government officer. The barn was in a rather dilapidated state when we moved here, so we refurbished it to our own design in 2006. Since then we have really enjoyed having visitors who can enjoy the barn’s special character and the charm of Hilton village.
Hilton is a small, quiet and very beautiful village dating back to medieval times. It has several ponds, a ford, medieval church, a turf maze and a splendid village green. It also has a children’s play park, riding stables, Post Office and shop and a pub.
The village green is at the heart of the village and extends for 27 acres providing locals and visitors with a wonderful area to walk and play. This common land is used as the village cricket field in summer and for the village feast week and sports day in July. Overlooking the green are some wonderful houses dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.
The maze, scheduled as an ancient monument, is one of only eight such turf mazes still surviving in England. It was made in 1660 by William Sparrow, a Royalist in Cromwell Country to commemorate the Restoration of Charles II to the Throne.
Hilton has good road links to the A14, M11 and A1, and easy access to the Park & Rides at St Ives and Madingley for heading into Cambridge.
There is a great range of activities on offer in this picturesque part of East Anglia, from walking to cycling, fishing, canoeing or sailing, and a wealth of interesting places to visit such as Duxford Air Museum, Anglesey Abbey and Cromwell's House, as well as the historic cities of Ely and Peterborough with their magnificent cathedrals and, of course, the colleges of Cambridge. Punt down the River Cam to Grantchester Meadows with its famous tea room, or take a boat trip around St Ives and surrounding villages.
