This cosy 4 bedroom traditional Hebridean house is full of character and has been extensively refurbished. This property is available for Self Catering bookings all year round. Tigh a Chaolais is in a tranquil location right next to Bosta beach at the North end of the island of Bernera on the West coast of Lewis. This location gives an ideal platform to explore the Outer Hebrides. Some of the best kayaking, wildlife and walking opportunities lie on your doorstep as well as many other activities for all of the family to explore and enjoy .
Although I was brought up in London, Bernera was always 'home' . My family go back generations in Bernera and my mother lives in the original croft house. I have 3 of a family with my husband Iain Angus and we live in the village of Kirkibost on Bernera. Iain Angus was born and brought up here and is a native Gaelic speaker. He was a crab and lobster fisherman for most of his life & has extensive local knowledge of fishing loch and sea, walks and hiking, wildlife etc & always happy to help guests with advice during their stay. Iain currently works at Lews College / UHI as a Maritime Lecturer and I work at the local doctors surgery. Both Iain and I are very involved in our community Iain is a retained Firefighter volunteer at the local community centre.
Tigh a Chaolais is situated on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. The Isle of Lewis is accessible by plane or ferry. Planes operated by Loganair arrive daily in the islands' main town of Stornoway from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. There are two large supermarkets in Stornoway. You can also travel to Stornoway by Calmac ferry from the mainland port of Ullapool. Alternatively, another Calmac ferry route takes you from Uig in Skye to Tarbert in Harris. Please see their websites for details. Both Stornoway and Tarbert are in driving distance of Tigh a Chaolais in Great Bernera. Although the local council bus services run from Monday-Saturday, we would recommend that a car is very useful for travelling while staying in Lewis. Please note that the closest fuel pump is in the village of Breaclete on Great Bernera where there is also an electric vehicle charging point at the community centre. Our local community centre on Bernera in the village of Breaclete has a cafe the opening times depend on the time of year you are visiting. The cafe offers Soup, Sandwiches and Home Baking. There is also a wee shop in the community centre cafe which sells lots of essentials and other items you may need during your stay. Check the notice board at the centre for the opening times.
