In the village of Lefktron, east of Stoupa, there is a castle that, according to Pausanias, was the temple of Athena with its statue. During the period of the Frankish rule the castle was rebuilt and was given the name Beaufort, meaning “nice castle”. The Prastova mine in Neo Proasti, where Nikos Kazantzakis worked with Alexis Zorbas, is also accessible to tourists. The mountainous routes of Taygetos, the canyons of Viros, Neptune and Koskarga are suitable for cycling, hiking and mountaineering. The area is well developed with plenty of services and activities.
