Michael was born and raised in a village close to Agios Gerasimos and went to Montreal to study engineering at McGill University. This is where he met his wife Debbie.
The villa was built while we were living in France. It was completed in the year 2000. As it was intended to be a family vacation home, only the best quality materials were used. The site was chosen because of the size and location which allowed us to create a private yet intimate setting.
Because of our love of country living and gardening we created the beautiful gardens including the unique entrance made from mulberry trees. The vineyard was added to continue the tradition of wine making in Michael's family.
Sitting on the balcony, listening to the song of a bird and feeling the breeze while admiring the surrounding gardens and lush green spaces of the neighborhood makes us feel at peace with nature. It is always a pleasure to walk around the garden to look at the flowering shrubs and trees, to sample a ripe fruit such as apricots, figs and oranges. Sitting by the pool on a hot summer day and looking at Mount Ainos and the Ionian Sea makes us feel as though we are in paradise. We never get tired of seeing the sun come up over the mountain and the amazing sunsets.
When Michael was transferred back to Montreal we continued to spend most summers at the villa. Our two children are now grown up and we have two grandchildren. Since we would like to spend more time in Montreal with them we decided to rent out the property. Before doing so we made renovations both indoors and outdoors.
We hope our guests will get the same pleasure from the property as we do and will cherish the memories they make during their stay.
The countryside around the villa is green throughout the year. A 15 minute walk down to Spartia beach will give you the opportunity to take in all the breathtaking views. There are two restaurants near the beach - Isalos and Waterwaves
In the village square, which is waking distance from the villa, there is a restaurant - Cavo Liakas and a cafe bar. There are 2 small grocery stores which are stocked with basic supplies.
Other nearby beaches are Pessada and Avithos. Of course there are many other popular beaches on the island such as Myrtos and Makris Gialos. On the way to Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, there is another good restaurant - The Olive Grove that serves traditional greek food and several large supermarkets. In Argostoli there are open air fruit and vegetable markets by the water that remain open late in the evening. On the main street, Lithostroto, which is opened only to pedestrians, there are several clothing, jewelery and souvenir shops. In the main square there is a wide variety of restaurants, bars and cafes. The clubs are open until the wee hours of the morning. Often in the summer there is live entertainment in the square.
The main attractions on the island are easily accessible from Hidden Gem Estate. Some popular spots are Lake Mellisani and Dragorati Cave, St-Gerasimos Church and the wine co-op nearby which produces the local robola wine. You can sample and purchase wines at the co-op. Driving towards the northern tip of the island where Fiskardo is located, you will pass Myrtos beach and the pretty town of Assos. On the way back you can take a different route and go through Sami and Agia Effimia. The route is very scenic as you go through the mountains and along the coastline.
Other popluar activities include water sports such as jet-skiing, water skiing, snorkeling, sailing and kayaking. Boat tours that visit the coastline of Kefalonia or nearby islands is also possible. Our housekeeper can book these tours for you.
