The property is on the foothills of Mount Olympus, in Pyrgetos, overlooking the rich plains of Thessaly before the Tempi valley from an altitude of 140 meters. Pyrgetos is a no frills village of the Greek countryside with 2.000 inhabitants, that lives and breathes during the whole year, without population spikes during the summer season. It is easily and immediately accessible through the A1 motorway (Athens – Thessaloniki), which is known by its European moniker E75.
Amongst others, Pyrgetos is at a distance of:
- 10 minutes (10 km) from the verdant picturesque valley of Tempi, a NATURA protected area;
- from 10 to 25 minutes (from 15 to 25 km) from eight different BLUE FLAG awarded beaches (3 in Nea Mesaggala, Neoi Poroi, Platamonas, Skotina, Leptokarya, Plaka Litochorou);
- 15 minutes (17 km) from the Castle of Platamonas, standing since the 13th century;
- 40 minutes (43 km) from Dion where the tomb of Philip the Second, the father of Alexander the Great, was found;
- 75 minutes (120 km) from Thessaloniki, a major airport, the second biggest city in Greece and capital of Macedonia;
- 90 minutes (125 km) from the impressive monasteries of Meteora.
I am a Greek enjoying living in a rainy country for a substantially longer time than Greeks are expected to. I travel a lot, and intend to keep on travelling; that's probably the easiest way to learn and grow. Meeting the locals on my journeys is a major part of the experience and fun. I am very happy to contribute myself to the well-being of others by offering my summer house in the village I spent my childhood at. And what village; on the foothills of the mountain of the ancient gods. Welcome, to My Home In Olympus!
The area offers travellers plenty to experience; it has a rich cultural history with ancient ruins, churches and chapels; picturesque hikes on its varied terrain, among fields and vineyards; and a host of activities from swimming and water sports to wine-related events in many of the neighbouring villages. Pyrgetos is known for its agricultural production and its fresh produce, and especially its kiwis for which it is globably acclaimed.
The area's microclimate is dry and warm during the later spring and summer season, as well as the early autumn season, with cool nights. There are seldom any extreme weather phenomena, with transient as much as welcome summer rains to highlight the tang of the fertile soil of Thessaly and chill down the air. The village has supermarkets, restaurants, coffee shops and bars, none of which is as near to My Home In Olympus as to cause a disturbance. Pyrgetos itself, outside its big annual festival on the 23rd and 24th of August, is not a major tourist magnet. This makes it ideal as a calm base in order for one to explore the destinations in Thessaly and Macedonia.
